iOS and OS X narrowing the gap with Windows


Shipments of devices based on Apple's Mac OS and iOS will close the gap on those of products running all flavors of Windows over the next two years, but Windows will then start to pull away again, according to figures from Gartner.

OS X Mavericks: Finder tabs and tagging


Apple’s relationship with the OS X Finder has been a funny one. Since 1984, the Finder has been how Mac users interact with their files, but it’s always been a bit too confusing for many users. Starting with the introduction of the Dock in OS X’s first release, moving on to Spotlight in Tiger, and culminating with the addition of Launchpad in OS X Lion, Apple has long been adding alternatives to using the Finder to dig through folders.

The flatness, the 3D effects: iOS 7 looks like a brand new phone, one you already know how to use. New MacBook Air offers best battery life of any Apple laptop


When Apple revealed the new MacBook Air at WWDC, the highlighted feature was its drastically improved battery life. While we didn’t experience the 12-hour battery life cited by Apple, our tests do show that the new MacBook Air lasts considerably longer than before. And our results were the best we've seen from an Apple laptop.

Boosted speed and endurance in new MacBook Air


Most of the products Apple announced at WWDC won’t ship until later this year, but the new MacBook Air models are here. The MacBook Air didn’t undergo a dramatic, Mac Pro-like redesign—all of the changes to the MacBook Air are hidden under the hood. Even compared to last year’s MacBook Air—which brought Thunderbolt and USB 3.0—this new Air is more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Why isn't Twitter part of the NSA PRISM snooping program?

Microsoft was the first to partner with the NSA in 2007, according to the once-secret PRISM PowerPoint deck. Other big-name tech companies followed, and even the obscure PalTalk joined the fray. But, quite conspiculously, Twitter never joined the government snooping program—there's no reference to the company in the NSA document.

Google's All Access music service coming to iOS "a couple weeks from now"


In my hands-on with Google’s new All Access subscription music service, I bemoaned the lack of support for Apple customers and didn’t think we’d see it in the foreseeable future: “And given that Google doesn’t even offer an official Play Music app for iOS devices, I don’t expect to see All Access on the iPhone or iPad anytime soon.”
