Western Digital ships highest capacity SATA hard drive

Western Digital announced on Tuesday it's been shipping the industry's first serial ATA (SATA) 3TB internal hard drive for about a week. The new drive passes the previous 2.19TB ceiling due to 4-kilobyte sector sizes.

Seagate, Western Digital slash hard drive warranty periods

Seagate’s warranties on certain drives will be reduced as of December 31, 2011 and WD will follow beginning January 2, 2012. All drives shipped prior to those dates will continue to carry the current warranty term associated with the products. Seagate and Western Digital are cutting back on hard drive warranties—in some instances from five years to one—in order to save money or redirect it to product development.

The warranty period reductions (first reported by The Register) mean some of Seagate’s and WD’s most popular drives for desktops and laptops will no longer carry three- or five-year warranties.

Western Digital warns of slow recovery in Thailand

The company restarted production of hard drives this week in one of its buildings in Bang Pa-in, after the facility was submerged in six feet of water since Oct. 15, WD said in a statement on Thursday. Flood water was pumped out from the facility on Nov. 17 and power was restored on Nov. 26. But while some recovery was ahead of schedule, "much work remains to be done," said John Coyne, CEO of WD said. Hard-drive maker Western Digital has resumed the partial production of hard drives in Thailand, but also warned that some of its operations were still under water from the severe floods that hit the country starting late July.

Survey: Apple rises in workplace despite IT skepticism

Less than two years after they were introduced, iPads are helping sell cars, fly airplanes, and make medical diagnoses—but such uses may just be scratching the surface. Steve Jobs may have been famously skeptical about enterprise applications of Apple’s products, but a new survey from the Enterprise Device Alliance shows that Apple devices are poised to keep making big inroads in the business market, even if IT managers remain somewhat dubious.

Thailand floods spur rush to SSDs

Rush orders for solid-state drives (SSDs) increased last month in the wake of massive flooding in Thailand that caused a serious drop in hard disk drive supplies.
According to DRAMeXchange, a research division of TrendForce, rush orders for SSDs rose even as shipments of end-market products, including PCs, smartphones and tablet PCs, continued to drop because of sluggish economic conditions.

Refurbished Mac buying guide

Maybe you’re a college student. Maybe you’re one of Britain's vast numbers of un- and under-employed workers. Maybe you’re simply frugal. Whatever the case, the situation facing you is this: You’re on a budget, you need a new computer, but even with limited cash you’d rather not buy an inexpensive Windows-based PC—you’re an Apple fan and don’t want to switch. What to do?
