There are many good reasons for wanting to backup important files from your Mac to the iphoneAlthough the iPhone as limited storage compared to the Mac, many people find it still has plenty of space to store vital files. The iPhone is also one device that you typically keep close at hand, so you’ll have the files backed up and with you (this makes it an ideal backup solution when travelling).

How to turn your iPhone into a USB drive

So if you’ve decided to backup some files to your iPhone? This tutorial shows you how to get started. Want you want to do is to turn your on iphone into a form of USB flash drive. There are quite a few good apps on the App Store that enable you to do just that. But the one we’re going to look at is USB & Wi-Fi Flash Drive which you can get from the App Store. Once you’ve got the USB & Wi-Fi Flash Drive app installed you can follow these steps to use the storage space on your iphone to backup files:
  1. Connect your iPhone to the Mac using the Lightning to USB cable.
  2. Open the Flash Drive app
  3. Open iTunes
  4. Click on Devices > iPhone
  5. Click on Apps
  6. Scroll down to find File Sharing and click on Flash Drive in the Apps
  7. Drag the files and folders you want to backup to the Flash Drive Documents window on the right.
The files will now be copied from your Mac OS X desktop to the iphone storage. You can reverse the process to copy the files from iTunes File Sharing to Mac OS X. You don’t need to Sync the iPhone when using iTunes File Sharing; files are transferred to the iPhone's storage as soon as you move them to the Flash Drive Storage area in iTunes.
